Offshore Breeze

Captured off the New England Coast on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2014. A stiff northeast wind meets a breaking wave generated by a pair of low pressure systems spinning around south of NewFoundland.

Trail Riding on a Terminal Moraine

New England’s “Outer Lands”, which include outer Cape Cod, and the islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, are essentially the remnants of a giant terminal moraine left behind by the retreating glaciers and ice sheets that once covered present-day New England. Recently, we’ve been documenting some of the trail riding and mountain biking opportunities in this fascinating landscape, where single track trails wind through shrub oak forests and windswept moors, and the smell of the salty sea is always in the air.

We captured the image above while following our friend Sean Curry around the pine forests of Nantucket Island. In the low light of dusk, we were able to use a relatively slow shutter speed (1/30th of a second), combined with the panning of the camera, to add a sense of movement, speed and direction to the scene. The image below offers a off-road cyclist’s perspective on the coastal landscape dominated by the many green shades of shrub oak, berry bushes, heath and much more.

Happy trails!
-Brian and Emily

Winter Wedding, Full Moon at the Round Barn Farm

We photograph one or two weddings each year at the historic Round Barn Farm Inn in Waitsfield, Vermont. It’s a beautiful and top-notch venue, and it’s always a pleasure for us to work with the Round Barn’s friendly and hard-working staff. Sarah and John’s recent wedding coincided with a rising full moon, which by 8pm cast a subtle blue hue on the barn and the world surrounding it. Sarah and John, along with some of their friends and family, wandered out to enjoy the moonlight and stars. It wasn’t long though before they were chased by the chilly winter air back to the warm and cozy environment inside the barn. – Brian

Photo of the Month – March: Arctic Lava

We call this image “Arctic Lava”. It was early May few years back, and the midnight sun was hovering above a 5000 yr old lava flow in western Iceland, less than one hundred miles from the Arctic Circle. We were in the region working in partnership with Iceland Tourism, exploring opportunities for backcountry skiing and adventure tourism, while investigating the development of a future national park on the Hornstrandir Peninsula – a place that could some day become Iceland and Europe’s largest protected wild area.

Camera Info: Canon 5D, 200mm, ISO 160, 1/125, f5.6

New Wedding Portfolio to Share

We’re in the very early planning and research stages of a long-overdue website upgrade. (With some luck, we’ll have a beautiful new website to share in the fall of 2012!) In the meanwhile, we’ve been sifting through the hundreds of thousands of photos we’ve captured in recent years, and building out an image library that we (and our clients) can tap for an increasing array of projects. On the wedding front, we’ve put together a new wedding portfolio to share, which can be viewed as a simple online slideshow. You can access this through the Weddings page on our main website, www.EmberPhoto.com, or through this direct link here.

Thanks and enjoy the photos.
