Skiing Vermont Powder

During an historic two week cycle of snowfall that blanketed our mountains with more than 60″ of fresh snow earlier this month, Rider McCrellish dances with gravity at Vermont’s Mad River Glen ski area.

Skiing with the Kids

After climbing Vermont’s General Stark Mountain (home of Mad River Glen ski area), we opted for a quick family photo before setting off on a very fun descent down Mad River Glen’s northeast facing trail network. Despite the dearth of snow here in Vermont this season, there is still top to bottom skiing at Mad River Glen right now. Our girls (Maiana, 3 yrs, and Lenora, 8 mos) ride on our backs when we climb mountains and ski, often sleeping for 1-2 hours during our climb, and then waking in time to enjoy the thrill of gravity with us on the way down.

First Turns of the Season…

It’s late October in Vermont, a time when Old Man Winter starts to come around again after several months away. And while the Old Man might not be settling in for the winter season just yet, it sure is fun to grab the skis again, head up into the hills, and slide around on the nice coat of early season snow he recently laid down for us. – Brian

Welcome Lil' Snowflake

Please welcome the newest member of the EmberPhoto team, Maiana Snow Mohr (pronounced My-ahna and aka Lil’ Snowflake), who completed her wild journey into the world (including many great ski days in-utero) on Feb. 19th, 2013 at Gifford Birthing Center in Randolph, VT. She was 7lbs, 7oz and 20.5″ at birth, and she’s a very healthy, playful and vibrant little girl who is eating well, pooping well and getting a whole lot more sleep than we are! We’ve been back out in the snow-covered fields, forests and mountains with her daily since she was just nine days young, and we’re looking forward to many unique adventures together in the weeks and months to come.

Recent Published Work to Share

This past fall, Woman’s Adventure featured an image we captured while packing up the ski-bikes during our recent month long, self-supported and bicycle-powered skiing adventure through Arctic Norway.

We published a photo-driven feature in N Magazine this past fall, celebrating the fall tropical storm and surfing season along the New England coast. Here’s a glimpse at the center spread, below, and the full feature, HERE.

An image we captured while skiing in the High Peaks of New York’s Adirondacks last season ran as a spread in Powder magazine alongside a story about skiing the region after the passage of Tropical Storm Irene in August of 2011. Irene produced dozens of new landslides, many of which are skiable, in the Dacks.

Black Diamond Equipment Ltd., makers of top-notch equipment for backcountry skiing and climbing, featured this image on their website this past fall. We captured the image while approaching a peak above our seashore camp well after midnight during early May in Arctic Norway.

Vermont’s BTV Magazine, which covers the Burlington, VT scene, chose our image for the cover of their winter edition. The image feature’s Emily’s sister, Leah, enjoying some freshly falling snow here at home in the Green Mountains.

Baby Snowflake

We’ve got a little girl on the way. We’ve been calling her Little Snowflake. And while she seems to be very much enjoying her time in the womb – including the nearly sixty ski days she’s logged, albeit upside down and backwards! – we expect to meet her very soon during the month of February. So stay tuned for more updates!

Sunrise in the Greens

Camel’s Hump and Mad River Glen’s historic Single Chair stand tall above an undercast sky during recent sunrise over Vermont’s Green Mountains. The photo was captured a few days before Christmas, at the beginning of a three week cycle of very snowy and wintry weather.

Foliage Skiing on ESPN

While there may not be much more than fallen leaves covering the valleys, colder temps have enabled snow to fall in our local mountains several times already this month. With good color still clinging to the hardwood trees, it’s a real treat to out in the snow this time of year. Foliage skiing, as we tend to call it around here, has become an annual pastime…seasonally appropriate adventure at its best. We recently published a short writeup and photo essay on the subject on ESPN.com. You can check it out HERE.
Happy fall!

Gravity

In early May, after four weeks of bicycle-powered skiing through the Alps of Switzerland, Austria and Italy, we finally gave into gravity once last time as we rolled out of the mountains toward Zurich. We skied delectable corn snow in the morning, coasted through orchards of blossoming fruit trees after lunch, and camped among songbirds one last time by a river choked with snow melt. By morning, our surroundings down in the forested foothills had us feeling like we could have already been right at home in Vermont. Then a local train whistled by… Vermont was still a long way off.

Look for more updates about our recent adventure in the Alps on our skiing website, www.AdventureSkier.com or at this link HERE.

Photo of the Month – April: Pedal-Powered Skiing in the Swiss Alps

In pursuit of some good old fashioned adventure, and in partnership with several outdoor brands and media outlets, as well as Switzerland Tourism, we set off in early April on a month long, bicycle-powered skiing adventure through the heart of the Alps of Switzerland (as well as Austria and Italy). The image above was captured while taking advantage of Switzerland’s world-class rail system at the start of our trip. (The skis and poles ride strapped the the sides of our trusty, one-wheeled BOB trailers, while the rest of our gear travels inside the trailer bag and within bags/panniers attached to the bikes.)

Throughout the months of April and May, you can follow our adventure on our skiing website, www.AdventureSkier.com or at this link HERE. Thanks and enjoy! – Brian and Emily
