LOCAL ADVENTURERS SHARE TALES OF SAILING AND SKIING IN ICELAND

MAKE CASE FOR PROTECTING EUROPE"S LARGEST WILDERNESS AREA

Fayston, VT – On Saturday, March 22nd, Moretown, VT-based adventurers/photographers Brian Mohr and Emily Johnson will bring their multi-media show, “Sailing and Skiing Iceland” to the legendary Mad River Glen ski area. The show is part of the photographers ongoing Wild People, Wild Places program, and will start at 7pm. This past May 2007, Mohr and Johnson spent several weeks in Iceland’s West Fjords region, helping local tourism authorities explore opportunities for backcountry skiing and human powered recreation. Using a sailboat as a “floating basecamp”, they rowed ashore each day to access the region’s snow covered coastal mountains.

“After eating fish eggs for breakfast, we’d spend the day climbing and skiing high above the beautiful north Atlantic ocean," says Mohr. "There is talk of oil refineries and aluminum smelters in this region. Locals are hoping tourism can save them for this kind of development." The region is also home to one of Europe’s largest wilderness areas, the remote Hornstrandir peninsula – now proposed as a new national park.

“We were invited to Iceland to help build the case for the protection of Iceland’s prized coastal mountains,” says Mohr. “Activities like backcountry skiing, hiking and sea kayaking are very compatible with Iceland's conservation goals.”

The show features a mix of video and stills, will run approximately one hour and be followed by raffle of outdoor gear. A percentage of all proceeds will be donated to conservation efforts in Iceland. Mohr and Johnson are regular contributors to Backcountry Magazine, Vermont Life and others, and can be reached through their website at www.emberphoto.com.
